26 APR 1945 Monett, Missouri ![]() At 6:15 on the morning of 26 April, the citizens of Monett, Missouri were drawn from bed and breakfast by a loud droning sound that literally shook the foundations of most buildings. Witnesses claim that two strange- looking aircraft were dogfighting above the town. This 'duel' in the sky over Monett went on for twenty minutes. As the citizenry watched, the position of the two aircraft slowly drifted to the north of town. By 6:30 Mayor Frank Peabody had placed calls into Jefferson City to notify Governor H.J. Powell. At 7:05 it was apparent that one of the craft took on some damage. A deputy sheriff, who had run home to nab his field glasses, stated that the two craft had lightly collided. Even though both aircraft were still in the air, he could see debris of some sort fall earthward. Moments after the collision, a tremendous concussion ripped through the town. Windows were shattered in most buildings. To the north of town a ball of smoke and fire could be seen rising into the air. Mayor Peabody stated that, immediately following the blast, the two craft began moving northwest toward the Northern White Feather Nation (formerly Kansas). He said that, even though the damaged craft lagged behind, both were out of sight within two minutes. At 7:10 a fire and rescue team was dispatched to the scene of the explosion north of town - an empty field often used by truckers as a rest stop. At the same time a flight of three RLAC Pogos, from nearby Carthage Air Corps Station, arrived in the area over Monett. No injuries were reported in relation to the explosion, but several intriguing photographs are available that show severe blast damage and a perimeter of scorched earth. One photo shows an unexploded aerial bomb. ![]() According to the Project GRIP report, at 7:50 AM an RLAC Pogo piloted by Capt. S. Simpson located the damaged flying disk over Crawford County in Southeast Kansas. The Pogo was fired upon. Capt. Simpson destroyed the craft with two Whizz Needle rockets. The second flying disc was never located. On 27 April, after guarded transport to Project GRIP facilities in Roswell, New Mexico, the unexploded bomb was found to contain a biological warhead of a toxin similar to anthrax, a usually fatal disease to warm-blooded animals. It was never made clear whether the incident over Monett was a real 'duel', jet jocky play, or an accident. One theory suggests the incident was staged by the Nazi's, for reasons unknown, and that it backfired on them. Whatever the reason, the DOD issued a blanket order to shoot down or capture any and all detected Nazi flying discs. The OSI managed to trace the route of the two discs from a Nazi base in Cuba codenamed Waffe der Massenzerstörung [Weapon of Mass Destruction]. The Project GRIP report refers to this disc as a "Type 5 Disc" |
